Little Trip in Tallinn

Yesterday (15/05/09) me and my friend (and namesake) went to Tallinn for a day cruise. I got free gift card when I was donating blood last time. Anyway, the boat left at 8am and crossing the Gulf of Finland took 3 hours. Not very exciting trip, quite many of the passengers had started already drinking while we had our breakfast in boat’s café. Fascinating… not.

Breakfast

My first impression… don’t know. I guess it’s better not to say about harbour, there were couple shopping centers for tourists who don’t want to go further than to nearest shop where they sell booze. Or travel plan included having tea and cake (and croissant) in the best café in Tallinn and cider and beer in the Depeche Mode Bar. While we walked to the Old Town (probably the most interesting part of the city) we checked few shoe shops in Viru Center. It was mixed experience. First thing I saw was Amarillo restaurant, Robert’s Café and Seppälä clothing store, you really didn’t feel home sickness there, not to mention that very near was Hesburger (Finnish hamburger restaurant and they have places also in Latvia, Lithuania and in Germany). Oh well, that’s life.

Streets in Tallinn

But rest of the Tallinn was beautiful. There were many small paving stone streets going between old buildings. And zillions of small crafts shops (I bought black Embroidery thread from one of them – 20m (at least I think so, there is only Russian writing) was 6EEK, which apparently is 0,40€). After the tea we went to Depeche Mode Bar, which hadn’t opened its doors yet. Even though it was already like half past noon. D: We were bit worried if bar had had to quit because of low economy. :/ We made little round in the old town before trying again and this time successfully. :D

DM BAR :D:D:D

Wow, just wow, the whole place was decorated to suit with the theme from the floor to the walls. Music was obviously by Depeche Mode. Place wasn’t exactly full, but then it was only afternoon, although my friend told that she had seen the bar full only two times… Later there came one guy and after him two girls (who stared us, hmm….), so many people. ;) We sat there listening to music maybe three hours. We could have spend there whole evening, if we weren’t supposed to go back to Finland at 5pm. :/ But we decided to try come back later this summer.

My camera’s battery ended in DM bar so unfortunately no photos when we were in Olde Hansa a medieval restaurant. I drank just a glass of spicy white wine and my friend had also forest mushroom soup. I have to say that the wine was surprisingly strong.

Unfortunately, then it was time to go back home. :(

I think I heard about some years ago, but it’s still feels bit crazy idea but at the same time fabulous. I hope it will stay open still long time :D

Hehe, I do too!! I’d love to pay a visit myself someday… =] Especially since I plan on travelling to Finland at some point in the next few years or so.

Hehee well then you need to definitely check Tallinn too, because it’s only 1½-3 hours from Helsinki by boat :D (and going there isn’t that expensive).

Is that really a bar that’s like, dedicated to Depeche Mode? o.O Wow. We could do with something like that down here, man. =P

@Aimee As crazy as it sounds, yes it really is a bar completely dedicated to Depeche Mode. :P Apparently there is similar bars in Moscow and St. Petersburg according this interview :o (and even if that second commenter seems to think it was depressing experience, s/he is wrong, it was fabulous - even if we were almost only customers, but hey it was afternoon ;) )
