2007-21-08 The Apples In Stereo
I was in the library with Jo and I saw there this cd that I had to lend, just because of it’s name: New Magnetic Wonder by The Apples in Stereo. I love apples, so I wished that perhaps it might be good. This was my first encounter with The Apples in Stereo, will it be the last…
Facts
The Apples in Stereo was formed 1993 and they come from Denver. Band includes Robert Schneider, John Hill, Eric Allen, Bill Doss, John Dufilho, John Ferguson. New Magnetic Wonder (2007) is their 7th studio album and released via Yep Roc Records/Redeye Distribution and Elijah Wood‘s record label Simian Records.
Some thoughts about the covers
Collage, colourful collage. In a way somewhat fascinating (like onion cupola) but also little irritating. Like Indian palace in English garden in space rain forest. I peek inside and there’s more collages; French kings (so I assume…) and lot of flowers.
But the most important is the music in the end
The album actually has 24 tracks (if I can trust in XMMS) of which 14 has lyrics.
First track proofs my doubts correct, the best way to describe is pop that sounds like apple candies, sweet and slightly sour (I would like to note that I love apple candies… so it’s not necessarily a bad thing). On the first listening, songs pretty much flowed thru my ears. To best describe my first thoughts would be quoting their own song.
It’s the same old drag

But the more I listened the more I liked. In some songs I hear The Beatles and other 60’s pop bands. TAIS is not big music with big meanings, but their music is quite catchy. It’s actually quite harmless and happy pop-rock.
The first and last encounter?
I don’t think so. I’m interested to hear also their earlier recordings. I wouldn’t listen to this everyday, but it fits well in sunny late summer day like today. My favourites were Energy and Sunndal Song of which especially Energy had a lot of Beatles sound in it. So if you like music like this, I recommend trying The Apples in Stereo.

Comment
I feel the same way about The Dandy Warhols. Very listenable.
